Amphibious Excavator – History and Past Development
admin EIK2023-12-14T10:26:36+08:00What is an Amphibious Excavator?
Amphibious Excavator is a type of excavator that can move and operate in places where the standard crawler excavator is unable to do. This unique machine operates seamlessly on both water and on land in keeping with its name - “Amphibious” means both land and water.
Amphibious Excavators specialize in moving and operating where the ground is not solid, in soft terrain and wet environments such as bayous, marsh lands, rivers and swamps while floating in a body of water.
As excavators trekking in soft terrain and wet environments are required to have very low ground pressure, the Amphibious Excavator uses pontoon style undercarriage system to achieve an extremely low ground pressure compare to a standard crawler excavator, which is pretty much restricted to operating on hard surfaces. The pontoon style undercarriage which is based on Archimedes principle is also designed to float in water as a safety feature.
Variations of the Amphibious Excavator
The Amphibious Excavator is also known by many names around the world – floating excavator, floating dredger, amphibious dredger, marsh excavator, marsh buggy, swamp excavator, and the like and come in many shapes, sizes and attachments.
Amphibious Excavator is versatile in the sense that the upper body is able to install with either a standard reach boom or long reach boom, coupled with various front attachments for example, bucket, clamshell, rake, grapple, and even a dredge pump.
Amphibious Excavator with Spud Systems
As Amphibious Excavator has proven its effectiveness in working on soft, swampy and wet environments and over shallow waters, there is a need to improve its buoyancy and flotation abilities over deeper waters and to operate in areas where the traditional spud barges cannot access unless there is a deeper water. In comparison, an Amphibious Excavator can be easily assemble and disassemble for transportation from one place to another with ease. And to work on deeper waters effectively, spuds can be used for additional flotation and stabilization to counter the movements of the machine whilst floating.
The concept of using spud systems is well known in the dredging equipment industry. Early dredging equipment have utilized spuds since the 1900s. It was well established in 1980s with many publications explaining the usage of spuds and spud systems, one of which is from the US Army Corps of Engineers New Orleans District dated March 1983 – the article can be read here and the US Army Corps of Engineers Dredging Technical Report HL-83-4 dated March 1983 “The Survey of Portable Hydraulic Dredges” – the article can be read here.
Due to the wide and ubiquitous usage of spuds and spud systems in the dredging industry, early Amphibious Excavator manufacturers adopted spuds and spud systems to stabilize their machines in deeper waters. It is well known that the effectiveness of an Amphibious Excavator with spuds will depend on the length of the spuds used for anchoring into the water/river bed.

The EIK Amphibious Excavator Made a Huge Impression on The Mining Industry
admin EIK2023-04-13T10:39:42+08:00It is a huge success for the EIK team when four (4) of their amphibious undercarriages are selected for the largest mining project in Indonesia. A mining field of more than 200,000 hectares is worked by the EIK amphibious carriage AM350 and CAT336F. The AM250 transporter works to carry all the spare parts, materials, and tools that help the amphibious excavator work.
A tough job calls for the right machines. With a well-established presence in the mining sector, EIK Amphibious Excavators are well-equipped to deal with ongoing challenges such as dewatering, flooding, and more. In tropical regions such as Indonesia, the monsoon season can be challenging. Each monsoon season can last 5 months, resulting in a loss of productivity.
Due to the terrain and nature of the area, flooding can occur within a short period of time. With thick layers of mud, they complicate the dewatering process by clogging up the water pump, which must be stopped frequently for servicing and maintenance. In a nutshell, clearing is a tedious and punishing process.
With a 25-ton to the 35-ton amphibious excavator, the clearing operation can be carried out efficiently. With their large footprints, the pontoons create a very low ground pressure, allowing the amphibious excavator to maneuver unrestricted in soft terrain. In this way, the entire area can be cleared without requiring any access trails.
The patented 'multi-synchronous direct drive' system makes EIK the leader in amphibious excavators. Both experienced and new amphibious excavator users have become captivated by this paradigm shift in how modern amphibious excavators are designed.

admin EIK2023-04-13T11:33:40+08:00EIK Emergency Response Team has successfully completed 3 days of In-House Fire Squad Training from 19th October to 21st October 2022 (3 days) at EIK Engineering Sdn Bhd Headquarters, located at Iskandar Puteri, Johor. There are 30 participants involved in this training with the cooperation of the EIK Safety Health and Environment Department and Iskandar Puteri Fire Rescue Team which lead by the EIK Safety Officer.
The benefit of this training is that EIK ERT teams can gain more knowledge about Fire Science, Good Housekeeping, and Rescue Victims in Flat Places. Additionally, Mr. Ahmad Nadzran Bin Omar from Iskandar Puteri Fire Rescue Team has also taught about Passive and Active Protection Systems (Theory & Practical) to ERT teams. As part of the ERT course, the teams also learned how to extinguish fires and had the opportunity to do so in a group during this training
In addition, EIK would like to express gratitude to the firemen for giving EIK ERT teams a lot of information regarding safety and for ERT Teams who were participating in In-House Fire Squad Training. Therefore, EIK is looking forward to more training collaboration in the future.
